Glossary

Cable Needles: Cable needles are used to bring stitches in front of or behind other sitches to achieve a cable pattern. There are straight cable needles with a little bump in them to hold the stitches, and there are J and V shaped cable needles that do the same thing. Close | Top

Gauge Checker: A gauge checker is used to check the gauge of your knitted item, as well as checking your needle sizes. It has rulers on two sides, and a cut out inside to help keep track of the section that you're counting. It also contains holes that match the sizes of knitting needles in case you have a needle that you don't know the size of. Close | Top

Row Counter: A row counter is used to help keep track of the number of rows you have knitted. Sometimes you may wish to keep track of every row, sometimes, even other row, and sometimes you'll keep track of the number of pattern repeats. I have barrel counters which have knobs on each side to count up to 99. I also have beaded row counters that slip over your needles to count the rows. Each time you come to the counter on your needle, you'll slip it onto your other needle using the next ring. There are also clicker counters that you simply click for every row that you complete and the counter automatically increments. Close | Top

Stitch Markers: A stitch marker is used to keep track of specific stitches. They are helpful when you must make a certain stitch at the same point every row. They are also helpful if you need to keep track of a lace repeat. You would put one marker in between each repeat so that you know where it is supposed to end and you can check yourself. They make thin plastic stitch markers, and some people make similar ones by cutting straws. I also have some fancier beaded ones to match my row counters, but they work the same way. Close | Top
